We know that cows are beings with the capacity to experience complex emotions. It has been scientifically proven, with numerous data, that they possess the same neurological substrate generating consciousness as humans.

Regardless of the label, there is no way to obtain dairy products that do not cause suffering to these animals. Cows endure a range of physical suffering, stress, and fear, whether the farm is organic, free-range, grass-fed, etc. They are attached to brutal milking devices that inflict electric shocks and often cause abrasions. Their extra teats are cut off, their horns are mostly sliced off, they are mutilated while fully conscious, for example, having their tails docked. Cows, understandably, do not want to cooperate, so they are punched and beaten with sticks, their tails are twisted, they are poked with pitchforks, stabbed, etc. They spend their lives, in almost all cases, without exercise, on concrete or metal amid their own urine and feces, and end up becoming lame, like 100% of cows that do not live on pasture. There is more suffering in a glass of milk or a piece of cheese than in a piece of flesh, because even though animals consumed for their flesh live a life of misery and are killed in terror and pain, they die young.

1. THE FORCED REPRODUCTION CYCLE AND REPRODUCTIVE EXPLOITATION

To produce milk, bulls must be masturbated by hand or with an electro-ejaculator inserted into the anus until ejaculation. Cows are confined (often chained in tethered stalls) and repeatedly, forcibly inseminated: a farm worker inserts their hand into the cow's sexual opening and injects semen using a steel device or a semen gun to fertilize her. In smaller farms where farmers have only a few cows, when the cows see or hear the veterinarian arriving, they move as far away as possible because they remember the gun that will be forced inside them. Cows are not meant to be constantly pregnant, yet they are kept in a continuous cycle of gestation and lactation until their bodies are completely exhausted. While they could live about 25 years in nature, they are slaughtered between 4 and 6 years of age when they are completely spent. Furthermore, to maximize profits upon slaughter, farmers often arrange for cows to be pregnant again and ready to give birth right as they go to the slaughterhouse.

2. CALF THEFT AND MATERNAL HEARTBREAK

Immediately after giving birth, calves are ripped away from their mothers so that the milk produced for them can be sold to humans. This separation causes immense shock, leaving the bewildered mothers crying in distress, bellowing, and searching for their baby for days, sometimes weeks. Male babies, considered a worthless byproduct of the dairy industry, are either shot in the head shortly after birth, or castrated, isolated in individual stalls inside calf pens, dehorned with or without anesthesia, fed a soy-based milk replacer, and condemned to a short life of suffering before being slaughtered for veal. The vast majority of females will face the exact same tragic fate as their mothers.

3. SPECIFIC PRACTICES ON SO-CALLED \"ORGANIC\" FARMS

One might mistakenly believe that cows on organic farms are spared, but it is quite the opposite. Since they cannot receive antibiotics for mammary gland or udder inflammation (bacterial mastitis contracted due to teats damaged by machines), and because they live in unnatural conditions, barbaric methods are applied: a special tool is screwed into their udder and pulled downward with force, inflicting excruciating pain—a procedure that must be repeated multiple times.

4. EXTREME CONDITIONS AND MUTILATIONS IN FACTORY FARMS

Practically all dairy products come from industrial systems where 92% of cows spend their days tethered to a post. In addition to electric shocks, abrasions, and beatings, some cows undergo extreme mutilation surgeries, becoming "cannulated cows" or "fistulated cows," meaning their flank is pierced and sealed with a plastic plug to allow researchers and farmers to directly inspect their stomach and digestion without any regard for their physical integrity.
